Montgomery County voter info

The basics you need before primary day, from official sources. VoteMoCo is independent — these links go to the State of Maryland and Montgomery County.

Register to vote or update your registration

Maryland uses a closed primary — your party affiliation on file determines which partisan primary ballot you receive. If you are currently Unaffiliated or Independent, your primary ballot will be limited to nonpartisan races (like Board of Education). You can change your party affiliation up until the official registration deadline.

Register or update with the Maryland State Board of Elections

Find your County Council district

Montgomery County has five single-member council districts (Districts 1–5) plus four countywide at-large seats. Only voters in your district vote on your district’s council race; everyone votes on the four at-large seats.

How Board of Education races actually work

Board of Education seats may carry a district number (e.g. “District 2 seat”), but that district only describes which area of the county the candidate must reside in. Every Montgomery County voter — including unaffiliated voters — votes for every Board of Education seat. There’s no district-based vote-eligibility for BoE.

Board of Education races are also nonpartisan, so they appear on every primary ballot regardless of party affiliation.
